Jim van Os is Professor of Psychiatric Epidemiology and Public Mental Health, and Chairman of the Division Neuroscience at Utrecht University Medical Centre, Utrecht, The Netherlands, and Visiting Professor of Psychiatric Epidemiology at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, UK. He initiated a public mental health effort for psychosis in the Netherlands and is actively involved in mental health reform, moving away from classical symptom reduction models towards a focus on community and relationships. He is also active in Science in Transition, a movement that makes an effort towards making scientific research more relevant and impactful, as practiced for example in the Dutch User Research Centre, where Peter Groot investigates and promotes the tapering strip for psychotropic medications, and Will Hall conducts a worldwide antipsychotic medication withdrawal survey.
